The Truth About Protein

The word protein means: Of first importance. After water, protein is the most abundant substance in the body.

Protein molecules, which consist of amino acids linked together, are the basic building foundation for the entire body: the bones, muscles, organs, blood, arteries, antibodies, skin, hair, nails, hormones, tissues etc.

Protein can also help lower blood pressure, it aids in weight loss, keeps cholesterol levels low, it slows artery clogging, and it decreases your chance of getting certain forms of cancer. Taking protein has also been shown to be an excellent preventative measure against aging and illness. The proper amount of high quality protein is essential for repair, growth, and healing of any and all body parts.

Virtually everyone should ingest protein daily to ensure a continuous supply of basic amino acids. Amino acids bind together in infinite combinations to become protein molecules, which are needed to repair an endless number of tissues throughout the body.

There are nine essential amino acids that the body cannot produce, they must be supplied through your diet. There are also sixteen non-essential amino acids that the body can manufacture from the nine essential amino acids. All nine essential amino acids must be present for the amino acids to bind together for protein synthesis.

Protein can be found in meat and other foods you eat. Organic red meat and wild fish, for example, are great sources of natural animal based protein. Many people supplement protein into their diet, in addition to the protein they get from the foods they eat.

If you are going to take a protein supplement (usually comes in the form of a powdered shake) make sure that it is very high quality protein. Otherwise it will be useless and could do more harm to you body than good.

Whey protein vs. Soy protein: You will find that most protein supplements found in stores and on-line are whey protein. Whey Protein Isolate is the protein extracted from whey, the liquid by-product of cheese production.

There are some concerns you should be aware of that have to do with whey protein. For one, it is not a complete source of protein, it contains fat, and it contains lactose (potential issue for those who are intolerant).

There are many concerns about the milk source the whey came from: the health of the animal it came from, animal by-products, growth hormones, disease, pesticides, fertilizers, drugs etc. Some people are also allergic to dairy products.

Soy Protein Isolate, on the other hand, is protein that is extracted from the soybean, eliminating fats and certain acids. Overall, in my opinion, soy protein is much better than whey protein as a protein supplement source because it is natural and plant based, as opposed to animal based, which raises the same concerns as the whey products that I listed above.

However, there are some concerns with Soy Protein Isolate, so if you are going to buy a soy protein supplement it needs to be of the highest quality and purity. The source of the soy beans is important.

Are the soy beans organic, or fertilized and drugged? The processing methods used to make the soy protein can also adversely affect the potency and purity of the protein. Many companies process their soy protein too much, which prevents the retention of beneficial substances. Some people are also allergic to soy.

Many companies also alcohol-wash their soy flakes during production of things like soy milk, soy cheese, tofu, soy burgers, and even their soy protein supplements. Well not only do you not want to ingest something that has been washed with alcohol, this technique causes the loss of approximately 88% of the isoflavone conent.

What are isoflavones? Isoflavones are natural plant nutrients that mimic the function of human estrogen. Soy protein isolate should be water-washed, instead of alcohol washed, this ensures isoflavone content and is a cleaner, more natural way to clean and process the soy flakes.

There are a lot of kinds of protein supplements out there, but you need to make sure that you take the most natural form of plant-based protein supplement possible. I find that non-genetically modified soy protein works best for me.

Also make sure that you get sufficient amounts of protein from your diet. Do your research, even try a couple different kinds and pick what you feel works best for you.

Either way the company you buy your protein from should be able to give you all of the ingredients, tests, trials, and research to prove to you why their protein works the best. They also should offer a money back guarantee. If they can’t or don’t just don’t buy it because they are hiding something.

It is very unfortunate that most companies care about profit more than quality because it leaves us, the consumer, without much understanding as to what is best and with many products that are of little to no nutritional content to us. Usually the product with the best ads on the television, instead of quality, sells the most.

So don’t be easily persuaded and make sure that you read all of the research, ingredients, testing, and processing methods before you buy a protein supplement.

Whether you are an athlete, body builder, or just someone trying to get healthier, the amount and quality of protein you put in your body is of vital importance to your overall health and wellness.

Glutamine For Muscle Growth, Recovery & Fat Loss

professionalwhey.com Glutamine is the most abundant single amino acid in the blood and in the intracellular free amino acid pool (most abundant amino acid in muscle tissue). Glutamine concentrations fall remarkably after training within as little as 30 minutes, and remain low until complete recovery, up to as long as 5 – 7 days, resulting in decreases in strength, stamina and recovery. What does Glutamine do? Glutamine supplementation not only stimulates immune function, but decreases inflammation and protects muscle cells from the damage caused by hard workouts.[1] Glutamine helps to support the immune system by keeping the health of the gastrointestinal tract high which has the greatest effect on positive immune functions.[2],[3],[4], Increases Nitrogen Its structure contains two nitrogen atoms which make it the primary transporter of nitrogen, as it transports 35% of the nitrogen that gets into the muscle cell, which can equate to anabolic muscle growth. But lets not jump the gun just yet! Anti-Catabolic & Immune Boosting Following an intense workout, Glutamine levels in the body can fall by as much as 50% and remain low until recovery is completed. This is because an intense workout will take nitrogen carrying Glutamine from muscle tissue and use it to help with recovery and immune function. This fall in Glutamine creates a catabolic environment for muscle tissue. Increased Protein Synthesis Therefore by taking a pre and post workout Glutamine supplement, athletes and

Complete Protein Diet Bar-Optimum Nutrition Premium Protein Diet Bar, 15-50g Bars Chocolate Peanut Butter

Complete Protein Diet Bar-Optimum Nutrition Premium Protein Diet Bar, 15-50g Bars Chocolate Peanut Butter Review

High points of these bars:

-Very high ratio of protein to calories
-Very low saturated fat compared to other protein bars,
-Next to no sugars
-Taste (see below)

Given those three, it’s really hard for me to complain about the taste. Does it taste like a Snickers bar? No. Does it taste bad? Absolutely not.

If you’re comparing the taste of these bars to high calorie protein bars with a lot of sugar and saturated fat, I suppose these don’t taste as good, but if you’re shopping for protein bars, most likely you’ll be better served by something with the nutritional content of Optimum Nutrition’s bars. These protein bars are for the person who wants to add extra protein to their diet with a minimal amount of additional calories. If you are looking for a bar with maximum calories to support rapid weight gain, these probably are not the best bar for you.

Flavor comments:

I’ve tried chocolate peanut butter, chocolate truffle, and toasted coconut, and I found all pleasant, but in order, I found the coconut the best (if you like coconut), followed by peanut butter, and then the chocolate truffle. I will order all of them again, but find myself eating more of the first two than the last.

Results:

Using these bars (1-2 per day) in combination with Optimum Nutrition’s 100% whey protein and a fairly rigorous exercise routine (P90x for those of you familiar with it), I’ve put on about 10 lbs of muscle in 6 months and completely changed the look of my body (shred a lot of fat and revealed the six-pack I’d been seeking my whole life). Obviously the exercise is more important than the protein bars I’ve been eating, but I find these bars make for an excellent between meal snack to keep my metabolism burning all day long. I keep a stock of these in the cupboard at all times and highly recommend them.

Vegetarian Protein Sources

For those of you who have adopted a vegetarian lifestyle, or are considering one, you have surely heard the tales of how a vegetarian diet offers too little protein to be healthy. Well, since I have met and know many healthy vegetarians, I can assure you that this is not the case. Vegetarianism offers diets rich in all of the necessary vitamins and minerals, including an ample supply of protein.

How Much Protein Do I Need?

According to the American Food and Drug Administration, our recommended daily allowance for protein is 0.36 grams per pound of body weight. For a 135 pound person, that is approximately 49 grams of protein. This is an easily achievable target by anyone adhering to a healthy vegetarian diet plan.

Protein Sources in Food

So, what are the best sources of protein for a vegetarian? I have listed below some foods that contain all of the essential amino acids, which means they are complete proteins and therefore are every bit as healthy as any meat product you will find.

Beans

We have a variety of beans to choose from: Garbanzo beans, Lentils, Kidney beans Lima beans, Split peas, and Navy beans. Beans are great for soups, salads, or by themselves. Just one cup of black beans provides 15 grams of protein making them one of the best protein sources for a veggie diet.

Soy

I mention the soybean separate from the other types of beans, because it surpasses all other food plants in the amount of protein that it provides. In fact, its bioavailability is equal or better than many meats. It has become the staple food of many vegetarian diets.

Nuts

For those who love nuts, there are many different types. Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, almonds, cashews, chestnuts, macadamia, walnuts, and peanuts (my favorite) are all good choices for protein. With the large variety of nuts and their many uses, you should have no trouble getting adequate protein.

Grains

No vegetarian diet would be complete without grains. Types of grains include oatmeal, barley, wild rice, and rye. These grains can be found in a variety of foods. Look for whole grains in pasta and breads. Many people get the majority of their grains for breakfast in their cereals and even their bagels. It is best to look for 100% whole grains when you are making these selections to avoid those that are overly processed.

Seeds

Great for toppings on your salads or just a snack by themselves, seeds such as sesame, pumpkin, and sunflower are great sources of protein. One of my favorites is flaxseed, which is great for topping your cereal in the morning and along with protein is a great source for your omega fatty acids.

Natural Protein Supplementation

Although a balanced vegetarian diet offers more than enough protein for anyone’s needs, some may choose to supplement their diets. This is most often done because of food preferences or for athletic endeavors.

Probably the most popular vegetarian protein supplement is TVP, or texturized vegetable protein. TVP has been around for years and is excellent for supplementing your healthy diet plan. It has a “meaty” texture, which some like and can be used in soups, pizzas, casseroles, and many other prepared meals.

Additional supplements include soy protein powders and whey protein powders. Each offers an excellent blend of amino acids and is a readily bioavailable protein, but on the whole, we do not think these are necessary for the average person. They are merely a preference for some.

Vegetarianism is a natural and healthy lifestyle choice that can be every bit as healthy and fortifying as diets with meat and dairy. So, the next time someone perpetuates the myth of inadequate protein in vegetarian diets, make sure to challenge them on the greater array of protein sources your diet has over theirs!
